Studio Lighting

This was the first exercise-- which was meant to help understand the effect lighting has on an image.

"Precious Moments"

My first project was to take pictures, edit, and print off 5 final photos of either a still-life or a telling portrait. I decided to combine the two topics and created and telling-still-life. These photos are all of hands holding something important to that individual person. Through this the viewer can see where they have been/ who they are (through their hands) and who they are through their items.

My Home

This series has a very homey/ lived-in vibe. The lighting in the pictures as well as the small details help bring the viewer in to the pictures, not only because of how close up the subject matter is but also into the lives of those living in the space. The colors have a warm/ cozy effect on the subject matter. Lastly, the items are all things that everyday people will have seen sat some point which makes the series very easy to connect with.
The connection throughout the series and the way that the viewer sees the images are very similar. Both will be focused on how intimate the subject matter is as well as the strong connection people will be able to make between the series and their own lives. This series also helps send the viewer back to all of the small moments in their lives that they often dismiss. These are the moments where they notice the small details in things around them, but they don’t realize they are noticing them.
This piece was not influenced by any specific artist or body of art, but it was heavily influenced by my own life. I spent majority of my life being overly anxious about everything, especially things that I did not need to worry about. Since I have learned to deal with my anxiety and since my mental/emotional state have improved I have started to notice and enjoy things I didn’t use to notice. I also live by myself, because of this I pay more attention to the little things in my house—like paint, dust, cracks, organization, etc. It was because of the little things in my life that I decided I needed to document them so I don’t forget the small things in life.

Although the main reason for this piece is to make the viewer uncomfortable, it also has another purpose. The other purpose is to make the viewer thinking about their own personal characteristics that help define them as a person. It is supposed to show them that in many cases the characteristics can be both in and out of their own hands—"control”. Also, that occasionally we, as people, make decisions and afterwards it can be confusing as to why we made such a decision. In those cases it is sometimes as if another force within us is making the choices for us—regardless of whether they are good or bad.

Identity

This piece was influenced by me joining PRIDE and coming out to my friends and family. I wanted to use this to show how people change throughout their life, even to the point where they flip from what society has labeled them to be. I hoped these pictures would open people’s eyes to gender and sexual identity and possibly to their own lives.
These images are all connected through their composition, lighting, and emotional qualities as well as their ability to show the changes people go through in life.
This piece was influenced mostly by the book, “Body Alchemy” by Loren Cameron. It is a book featuring images of him as he transitioned and it is very insightful.
