Restoration
This project utilized photoshop techniques to restore this old family photo.
Deterioration
This project utilized images from my photo 1 class to practice photoshop techniques for deteriorating images.
Appropriation
My second project was to appropriate an older painting and put my face on one or more of the characters in the piece. The artwork that was selected was John Singleton Copley’s, “Thomas Mifflin And Sarah Morris”. It was selected because the two subjects have very different coloring and lighting. This made the artwork more challenging, but also gave the artist a chance to put two of his face in the single picture—this was humorous to me.
This piece gives the viewer not only a sense of my humorous nature, but also a deeper insight into my life and thoughts. It shows, if further though is put into it, that sometimes I get frustrated with myself or also that I make myself laugh. The technique also shows how I have been able to learn certain photoshop skills much faster than I thought I would be able to. Lastly, it shows my keen eye for colors and changes in shadows and lighting. Although, my photoshop skills are not yet strong enough to accomplish that in the image.
Narrative
This piece is meant to resemble the story of, “The Secret World of Arrietty”. It is a story about “borrowers”, small scaled human beings, who live under the house of life-sized humans. In the story they have to go on quests in the large house, which their small house is under, to help them gather materials they need to live. The main character is a small girl, Arrietty, who not only finds a friend in the life-size boy she meets, but she also learns to find herself and her life purpose.
I combined the objects in the piece due to the fact that they help give the piece a magical- feeling. The house is much better looking than the house in the original story, but it possesses the same fairy-tale vibe. The mushrooms help give the picture a wild/ nature feeling which aids the house and other objects in being better connected with a rustic, outside home. I also added the bed, bathtub, and can because they are more common house-hold items that not only help put other objects into the correct size category, but they also help give the picture less of a purposefully placed scene and more of a random-set-up life-style.
Promotion
These promotional pieces show my subtle and interesting take on the assignments given. They show how my art may not always be large, due to the fact that I often focus on small details that really pull the viewer into the piece. The pieces also reflect the deep and calm thinking process that I want my viewers to experience while viewing my pieces.
The importance to creating my own promotional materials is that I can handle multiple aspects of the artistic role. I can not only create my own artwork, but I can also set myself up for galleries and shows. By being able to create most of these items by myself I will be able to avoid second steps/connections that could eventually cause problems in the future. For example, if the person hired to make my posters quits or is late, I will be able to instead create my own pieces thus ensuring they are done correctly and on time.
Self-Portrait
I absolutely loved learning to use the pen tool. It came so naturally to me. It was a little different compared to photoshop, but not different enough to bother me. It was nice being able to back up as many steps as I wanted to, and I liked the way the programs have you change the slope of the lines. Some advantages of this program are that it is simple, especially compared to photoshop. Another is that the anchor points allow for easy changes between slopes and shapes. It is also helpful that you can add and delete anchor points whenever you need to. I will totally recommend this program to others.
Masked
This image is supposed to help the viewer visualize the concept of gender fluidity. Helping them better understand that some do not identify as a single gender but switch between genders.
My stance is that more people should be educated on this subject, and not just gender fluid but all gender identities, that way they may become more understanding for those around them. I chose to combine these images because of the nature of the topic. This allowed me to create a representation of how “fluid” this identity is. The switching of genders means these individuals cannot simply be put into a box like majority of everyone else, even though no one should be put into a box. The text gives a brief understanding of the concept, plus some facts regarding the situations these individuals go through.
